Old Dog, New Tricks

2020 started off with a bang! We had our first dog go into heat, and we were looking forward to breeding her. That’s when the “fun” began.

Our dog had a blocked cervix, and required artificial insemination procedures. That led to a caesarean delivery, and an overwhelmed, first-time mama dog. After attempting many suggested techniques and remedies, it became necessary to bottle-fed the puppies. Although my husband has bred many dogs over the years, this was my first rodeo!

I was making formula, getting up for feedings every two hours, and stimulating the dogs to eliminate. It felt as though I was living on YouTube and Google, looking for answers to the many joys and woes of orphaned pups. Each day, I was excited to share my new learning with my husband, and proudly dispelling the myth that you can’t teach and old dog (me) new tricks! And everyday, I grew more in love with the puppies. They took over my heart, and I found myself talking about them to anyone who’d listen!

In addition to learning about Dog Mom Life, I was gaining an understanding about the parallels between my care for the puppies, and the Lord’s care for me. Some of the lessons were so profound, that I will share them with you through this blog. Get excited, and stay tuned for “Puppy Dog Tales”!
