Petting Peeves

Our dogs are lovely, caring and well-socialized. They are also “hand magnets”! What I mean is, people see them and want to pet and play with them. When this happens, I move to become my dogs’ advocate for their safety.

Most people mean well, so I have put these boundaries in place to make sure the “stranger” is not a “danger” to the dogs.

  • Stop at a leash-length or greater distance to ask permission to touch the dog.
  • Stand quietly with your hands at your side, and make eye contact with me, not the dog.
  • Allow me the opportunity to assess any risks before granting your request.
  • Let me introduce you to the dog.
  • Respect the dog’s personal space, and do not corner them.
  • Do not play rough or hit the dog.

I want the dogs to enjoy the exchange and attention. These tips will allow everyone to have a great experience.
