Today, the 2020 graduates of Agnes Scott College were given the opportunity to experience more than a virtual ceremony. At 2:45pm, the processional began, and the alumnae marched across the campus, down the aisle and to their seats, to celebrate their resilience, tenacity and accomplishments. Although their degrees had already been conferred during last year’s Zoom service, this group of women (and a few men) gathered to experience a portion of what COVID-19 delayed, but did not deny.
My daughter, Christina was one of the graduates. I could not contain my tears at the site of her in her cap, gown and Master’s hood. “Mother-Pride” was oozing from all of my pores!
The undergraduate speaker, CJ, took time to acknowledge the fallen and remind us of the difference one year made. For her, it was very personal. Slated to speak at last year’s ceremony, she recounted the thoughts she had planned to share as her father would have been in attendance to celebrate with her. This year, only her mother was left to carry the family flag in her honor.
This post was meant, not to be a downer, but to remind us of the fragility of life and the importance of seizing moments, ALL moments. Do not wait for the perfect ones alone, for if you do, you will miss the milestones in your journey that could make a lifetime of difference.
Today’s pomp was under circumstances, but it was pomp just the same, and I am glad I was there.
